About Carl Schultz
Cellarmaster of Solo Wines
“The berry of the vine is unique. This fruit develops a life of its own, a second life after it's grape form, it has this amazing history; it goes back to biblical times. It’s one of the ancient liquids along with olive oil and honey that has stood the test of time.” – Carl Schultz

Carl Schultz graduated as dux student from Elsenburg Agricultural College and began his career at Simonsig Estate under the mentorship of Johan Malan, one of South Africa’s most respected winemakers. He later joined Hartenberg Estate, where he would spend the next 32 years as Cellarmaster and, from 1996, Production Director – helping guide the estate to international recognition for its wines.
Over the course of his career, Carl has worked internationally, including time in the Northern Rhône, and has travelled widely to broaden his understanding of viticulture and oenology. In 1997 he was invited to join the prestigious Cape Winemakers Guild, becoming its sixteenth member, and later served as chairman.
Carl has also been nominated for induction into the Ordre des Coteaux de Champagne – South Africa Chapter, an international order recognising individuals who have contributed significantly to the appreciation and culture of fine wine. This honour formally recognises him as an Equerry (Sire) of the Order of Champagne Ambassadors, part of a global community with embassies in seventeen countries.
Throughout his career, Carl’s philosophy has been shaped by influential mentors, strong teamwork, and the belief that great wines are the result of doing many small things consistently well.
After 36 years in the wine industry, Carl established Solo Wines by Carl Schultz in 2025 – a bespoke, independent venture, focused on artistic freedom, vineyard expression, and uncompromising quality.
Selected Career Highlights
“Very few Cape winemakers have spent as long working at one estate as Carl Schultz has at Hartenberg. In that time, he has produced some of the country’s finest red and white wines and continues to perform at the top of his game across a range of varieties. Carl is also a great thinker and listener, as well as a sensitive taster. Combined, these things make him a remarkable winemaker. South Africa is lucky to have him.” – Tim Atkin
